Shaken and Stirred, Alright

Hope everybody enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday.  Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes, and best of the year back atcha.

The halfway house for recovering substance abusers here in Hollyweird had a good time.  They closed off a few blocks of Dixie Highway, set up tables and chairs under a big tent, and delivered what looked like 150 hot turkey dinners to all comers, no questions asked.

seagramA makeshift band provided entertainment.  However, it seemed to me that most of the performers were drummers, including the ones at the keyboard and trumpet.

But the strangest addition was the bounce-house.  I’ve seen these around at kids’ birthday parties and outdoor festivals, but at a Turkey Day dinner for recovering adults?  I ask one of the aproned volunteers, taking a cigarette break.

“Just something we tried this year,” he says, frowning.  “I really doubt it will catch on.”

What’s the deal?

“It’s sponsored by Seagram’s.  You know, the distillers,” he tells me.  Only then do I recognize the colorful logo on the side.  “Some experimental device they say will help alcoholics get over their craving.”

Does it work?

He drags on his nail.  “Well, we nicknamed it the ‘Hurl House’.  Does that answer your question?”

Y’know, I thought that logo had a few extra streaks of color.  I wish him a happy holiday and depart.

Man that’s cold. You don’t even deserve coal in your stocking, you should get shit in your bed.

  2. Barbara Ganoush says:

LOL! I can see it: Drunks bouncing and barfing while therapists look on thoughtfully, taking notes! Great stuff!

  3. Kent Standit says:

I saw it, too. I figured it was the Salivation Army.

Y’know Kent, that’s actually pretty clever. And a lot less nasty than usual. Must be the spirit of the holidays. I won’t count on it lasting too much longer.

  5. Ms Calabaza says:

    I LOVE the concept! :~)

Do they have one for the therapists too?
