Hope everybody enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes, and best of the year back atcha.
The halfway house for recovering substance abusers here in Hollyweird had a good time. They closed off a few blocks of Dixie Highway, set up tables and chairs under a big tent, and delivered what looked like 150 hot turkey dinners to all comers, no questions asked.
But the strangest addition was the bounce-house. I’ve seen these around at kids’ birthday parties and outdoor festivals, but at a Turkey Day dinner for recovering adults? I ask one of the aproned volunteers, taking a cigarette break.
“Just something we tried this year,” he says, frowning. “I really doubt it will catch on.”
What’s the deal?
“It’s sponsored by Seagram’s. You know, the distillers,” he tells me. Only then do I recognize the colorful logo on the side. “Some experimental device they say will help alcoholics get over their craving.”
Does it work?
He drags on his nail. “Well, we nicknamed it the ‘Hurl House’. Does that answer your question?”
Y’know, I thought that logo had a few extra streaks of color. I wish him a happy holiday and depart.
