By now you know that the British government has created a list of 16 “undesirables” it will not allow to enter Great Britain. Via
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she decided to make public the names of 16 people banned since October so others could better understand what sort of behaviour Britain was not prepared to tolerate. The list includes hate preachers, anti-gay protesters and a far- right US talk show host.
“I think it’s important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it’s a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won’t be welcome in this country,” Ms Smith told GMTV. — The Independent [UK]
The talk show host, of course, is Michael Savage, whose unbelievably ignorant rantings may be heard on his egomaniacal show, Savage Nation. Listening to Dr. Sewage as I do most days, I learn that he has retained legal counsel in England to file suit, but that he has not been supported in this outrageous act of attempted censorship by his wingnut radio colleagues such as Blimpo or Spammity. Nor has he received support from the Left, whose radio presence is approximately nil.
He said Tuesday he has received support from the ACLU, however. Only thing I could find on this is one little quote from May 7th : “An attorney for the ACLU described the travel ban as a form of censorship, saying, “While some of these people may express views that others find disagreeable, often the cure is worse than the disease. It also deprives the citizens of that country of their ability to hear dissenting views.” Source
Meanwhile, here’s Sewage’s famous quote, one of many spittle-laced spewings, about the ACLU:
“Cops are getting knocked off all over the country because of the rules of engagement, written primarily by the scummiest class in America, the vermin of vermin, which are the left-wing lawyers who should be put in Abu Ghraib with hoods over their head, as far as I’m concerned. If I had the power by executive order, I would round up every member of the ACLU and of the National Lawyers Guild and I’d put them in a prison in Guantánamo and I’d throw the key away. Or I would reopen Devil’s Island and I’d put everyone in the ACLU into — onto Devil’s Island. I swear to God, that’s what I’d like to do to save this country. But, you see, I fantasize. That’s one of my flaws is I live in a fantasy land that can never be.” MediaMatters.org
I side with Sewage (and the ACLU) on this, of course, and invite both Wingnut Nation and their Moonbat counterparts to join. Freedom of expression doesn’t mean fuck-all if it doesn’t protect the ignorant, unpopular, depraved, and vile. It is particularly hypocritical of rightwing venom spewers — you know who you are — not to embrace this stench, but it isn’t surprising: their support of freedoms varies directly with their own biases and personal interests. Whatever else Sewage is, and I’ve emptied my vocabulary seeking synonyms for “lowlife,” he isn’t a chancel-prancing prayer harpy, whose bigoted intrusions into public institutions such as classrooms and courtrooms Wingnut Nation universally characterizes as Freedom of Speech. So they ignore this case.
Stay tuned! The show’s just starting.
