Across the country, the anti-abortion movement, long viewed as almost exclusively white and Republican, is turning its attention to African-Americans and encouraging black abortion opponents across the country to become more active. Black abortion opponents, who sometimes refer to abortions as “womb lynchings,” have mounted a sustained attack on the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. – NY Times
Credit the anti’s with coining the best phrase in the debate so far: “womb lynchings” is sardonically clever as it is rebarbative. Credit them as well with a new benchmark in ideological hypocrisy: there has been no greater obstructive factor to the Black agenda, which includes human rights, economic justice, and access to education, than the same socially conservative ideology brayed and practiced by those in or comfortable with the so-called pro-life movement.
Or am I wrong in thinking their newfound love for Black Americans ends with the emergence of the fetus?
Doubtlessly, there are disturbing stats to consider, e.g.:
Data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that black women get almost 40% of the country’s abortions, even though blacks make up only 13% of the population. Nearly 40% of black pregnancies end in induced abortion, a rate far higher than for white or Hispanic women.
But the road from there that leads to a conspiracy theory, as suggested by a new documentary by Mark Crutcher, a white abortion opponent, linking slavery, Nazi-style eugenics, birth control, and abortion, requires an embrace of paranoid bullshit one usually associates with rank and file wingnuts of the (overwhelmingly white) tea party persuasion.
“We figure if white people are sufficiently ignorant to swallow this crap, Black people should be, too,” one anti-abortionist explained, clutching her bible at a recent planning meeting. “And when you put it that way, it makes us look like we’re all for equality, too!”
P.S. If this approach fails, there’s the more traditional Republican approach: throw Mom in jail!
Last May in a small town in eastern Utah, a 17-year-old girl, seven months pregnant, paid a man she had just met $150 to beat her up in hopes of inducing a miscarriage that would resolve her crisis. He obliged, taking her to a basement and kicking her repeatedly in the stomach.
The fetus survived the assault and was born in August. The attacker went to jail. And the girl, whose name was never released because she was under age, became the center of a legal debate — and the piece of legislation now awaiting the governor’s signature or veto. The bill would formally criminalize what she did, that is, to seek an illegal abortion. — NY Times
Well, at least it’s race neutral….unless, of course, the data above on incidence of abortion among Black women reflect illegal abortions as well, in which case the same conspiracy theory about genocide of Black children now applies to imprisonment of Black women. But it’s only complicated to maintain a paranoid wingnut ideology if you’re concerned about your consistency, and that’s rarely a problem.
