Merry Cliffmas!

Fans in the City of Bodily Harm are besides themselves with joy today: ace pitcher Cliff Lee spurned larger offers from the Yankees and the Rangers to return to the Phillies in 2011.

Their starting rotation now is Halliday, Hamels, Oswalt, and Lee.  It has a chance of becoming the most formidable starting staff in the history of the game.

Hopes are high for the coming season.

This is demeaning, insulting, and blasphemous. You’re going to hell.

The whole damn region is equal parts frozen and giddy.

The potential for greatness is mind-boggling: those are 4 starters who even without the powerful offense they have behind them could each win 15 games next season, and any one of them could win 20. lPossibly two of them could win 20. Realistically that’s it — “just” two 20-game winners — but imagine the season ending with their records somethling like 21-10, 20-9, 17-11, 16-12. Settle for that, guys?

But those of us have been around the game (and this team) for a while also know that they haven’t won a damn thing yet, and that you play this very unpredictable sport with bats and balls on a field of grass, not stats and charts on a computer screen (I’ve updated the old saw!). So while we’re thrilled, what turns us on is the prospect of seeing this plan played out, not just its creation.

What a GREAT season this should be.

So, does that make the Wise Men Charlie and Ruben?

Meanwhile, Bob Feller died. “Feller? I hardly touched her!”
