Pissing Away Money

If there’s one thing that really chaps an ideologue’s ass, it’s hard data that contradict his heartfelt conclusions.

Ushered in amid promises that it would save taxpayers money and deter drug users, a Florida law requiring drug tests for people who seek welfare benefits resulted in no direct savings, snared few drug users and had no effect on the number of applications, according to recently released state data. — NYTimes

Oopsie.  How’d that happen?  Why, everybody knows that most welfare recipients use their taxpayer-provided benefits to buy drugs, cigarettes, and lottery tickets while neglecting their families and dodging employment.

From July through October in Florida — the four months when testing took place — 2.6% of the state’s cash assistance applicants failed the drug test, or 108 of 4,086, according to the figures from the state obtained by the group. The most common reason was marijuana use. An additional 40 people canceled the tests without taking them.

Because the Florida law requires that applicants who pass the test be reimbursed for the cost, an average of $30, the cost to the state was $118,140. This is more than would have been paid out in benefits to the people who failed the test, [a spokesman] said.

As a result, the testing cost the government an extra $45,780, he said.

Please note that the private companies who conduct the drug tests get paid no matter what.  Which is one of the reason Gov. Dickwithears, whose close financial and political allies have a heavy presence in that industry, wanted it to begin with.  This is called “Running government like a business.

And it gets even worse:

And the testing did not have the effect some predicted. An internal document about Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, caseloads stated that the drug testing policy, at least from July through September, did not lead to fewer cases….“We saw no dampening effect on the caseload,” the document said.

If you suppose for one moonbat moment that these findings have any impact whatsoever on the drooling thugs who gave birth to the policy, then you’re on drugs.  That’s simply not how the mind of a zealot works.

“We had to stop allowing tax dollars for anybody to buy drugs with,” said State Representative Jimmie T. Smith, a Republican who sponsored the bill last year. Taxpayer savings also come in deterring those drug users who would otherwise apply for cash assistance but now think twice because of the law, some argued.

And:

“Governor Scott [she mispronounced his name, “Dickwithears”] maintains his position that TANF dollars must be spent on TANF’s purposes — protecting children and getting people back to work,” said Jackie Schutz, the governor’s deputy press secretary.

See?  It’s the kids!  Protect the kids! We love our kids!  So what if that has nothing at all to do with this study and these stats!  It’s the kids!

In fact, the drug testing bill isn’t about drugs, kids, or the proper use of TANF dollars, and it never was.  In addition to the little financial bone Gov. Dickwithears gets to toss to his capitalist cronies as noted above, the law was just another offensive move in the war against the poor and the vulnerable, who are regarded by the conservative ‘Pub majority in the Florida Lege as dirty, lazy, evil, often illegal, parasitic, lousy parents and family members, substance abusers, spreaders of AIDS, committers of crimes, and dress funny.  Plus they vote ‘Crat.  And did you notice they’re mostly Black, Spanish. or something similarly dusky?

They are “The Other,” what Sartre called “Les autres,” as in “L’enfer, c’est les autres” (and No, that DOESN’T translate to Hell is other people, something Sartre never said) —  different, strange, despicable.

This is a moral war: So what if it costs money?   It’s worth it because it’s wrong to spend taxpayer money on drugs (even if they’re not actually doing that).  Ya gotta be tough on crime  even before there is one.  Let’s punish these people, these others.  Voters love it, it’s good for Florida, and it’s good for America.  God bless.

    Why do you hate America?

You are quite correct that Sartre neither said, nor ever meant, “Hell is other people.” This is a sad English translation that corrupts his insights and trivializes his world-view. He explained “Les Autres” many times, but to no avail in English-speaking cultures. However, we French are quite accustomed to being misunderstood but those on the planet not as blessed to be French.

Does the Miami Herald read your blog? The story on this issue in this morning’s paper practically plagiarizes this post.

    Yours is funnier, though.
