The Lunatic Is In the House

Want to know what the Senate is up to while you’re spending your time looking for a job?

On Capitol Hill, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, moved Thursday to vote on Mr. Obama’s proposal, in his broader deficit package, to permanently diminish Congress’s control over the federal government’s statutory borrowing limit, assuming that Democrats would break ranks and embarrass the president. Instead, Democratic leaders did a count, found they had 51 solid votes, and took Mr. McConnell up on what Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate majority leader, called “a positive development.”

Mr. McConnell then filibustered his own bill, objecting to a simple-majority vote and saying a change of such magnitude requires the assent of 60 senators. — NY Times

1270887-lunaticHead ‘Pubbie Mitch McConnell  (“Turtle Mac”) tries and fails to pull one on the ‘Crats, and ends up opposing his own bill.  Now that’s leadership.  That’s representing the American people.

I call bullshit.

Meanwhile, over in the House:

The word “lunatic” will be stricken from federal law under legislation that passed the House on Wednesday and is headed to President Obama for his signature….The Congressional action is the latest effort to remove language from federal law that has become outdated or is considered demeaning. Two years ago Congress took out references to “mental retardation.”  — NYYimes

The vote was 398 -1.  Bipartisanship at last!  But before you celebrate, consider the perspective of the lone dissenter:

The lone “no” vote was cast by Representative Louie Gohmert, Republican of Texas, who said in a statement that “not only should we not eliminate the word ‘lunatic’ from federal law when the most pressing issue of the day is saving our country from bankruptcy, we should use the word to describe the people who want to continue with business as usual in Washington.”

Was he thinking about Turtle Mac?  We’ll never know.  But I like his attitude.

Before you get over-enamored by Teabagger darling Louie Gohmert, consider this:

Just last week, in an interview with radio host Frank Gaffney, Gohmert suggested that the Obama administration was being advised by the Muslim Brotherhood. Last summer, he joined Rep Michele Bachmann in calling for an investigation into officials with alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, taking direct aim at Huma Abedin, Deputy Chief of Staff to Hillary Clinton.

He is also the chief (really only) proponent of the theory of terror babies—a conspiracy where terrorists send pregnant women to the U.S. to be born as American citizens, allowing future terrorists to return to the U.S . This theory has been supported by absolutely no one. Perhaps the dullest thing about Rep. Gohmert is that he’s a birther.

No matter what happens with the budget deal, both Dems and Repubs will claim credit for the popular parts and blame each other for the pain. Once that’s established, we’ll move on.
